EvenTide Services

EvenTide, each Sunday at 7 pm in the Sanctuary at St. James United Church.

Join us each Sunday evening for EvenTide, a series of worship experiences across the month.
We rotate through a variety of styles and formats, some with a strong music focus, others more focused on storytelling and conversation, each a way to connect with God and others at the end of the day.

First Sunday: Taizé Prayer
Based on the prayer tradition of the interchurch monastery in Taizé, France that is frequented by young people from all over the world, this reflective service uses chants, readings and periods of silence. The music is sung in many languages, repeating simple phrases from the Psalms and other Bible readings.

Second Sunday: Reflections
This service which follows the church year explores the themes lifted up by the scriptures through a variety of stories, songs and prayers. Sometimes with more of a traditional sermon, sometimes with an interactive discussion, this service is crafted to nurture our spirits as we get ready for the week ahead.

Third Sunday: Celtic Vespers
Celtic Vespers is a new take on an old service. One of several daily “offices” developed in the early years of Christianity, vespers is a service of readings, prayers and candle-lighting as evening begins. This version celebrates Celtic spirituality through the music traditions of Ireland, Scotland and Newfoundland.

Fourth Sunday: Tapestry
This service celebrates the strands that make us who we are in terms of faith, experience, and identity. Based on a theme, the service makes use of popular music as its “hymnbook”. Participants are invited to bring a text or other media that represents the theme. Time is given for individual and shared reflection.

Fifth Sunday: Jazz Vespers
Like Celtic Vespers, this service of candle-lighting, readings and prayers also celebrates jazz music.

Choose one service or come to them all, we look forward to seeing you at EvenTide.
